What stays with you after the first hook

In the preview, follow the bass for a while, then the percussion around the kick. A roll, a chopped vocal or a small break can make you want to return to a track. That is a good starting point for knowing what you are looking for in your next record.

Compare two or three releases at a similar volume. If you keep returning to the same one, try to say why: the bass, the bounce, a shifting loop? Those words will help when asking for advice, even without knowing every style name.

Hardtek and hard techno: comparing records

The names sound similar, and categories vary between catalogues. Open a few product pages in each section and listen to how the kick and bass work together, how the percussion moves and where the breaks come in. Energy alone does not distinguish the two.

A record can also sit between several aesthetics. If you are preparing a set, play it alongside a release you know well: you will hear more quickly what it adds and which transition to try. The section helps you search; the connection comes through listening.

03

Turning the record over

The track highlighted on a product page is only part of the EP. When previews are available, listen to both sides. A second track may be enough to decide between two purchases, or give the record a use you had not expected.

For mixing, look for places where you could bring it in and take it out: a clear introduction, a stable loop, an ending that leaves space. If the preview cuts off those passages, a longer stream published by the label or artist may help.

04

Making room in your crate

Put your favourites alongside a few records you already own. When would you want to play them? To establish a groove, change the energy, introduce another sound? Every purchase does not need to serve the same purpose.

If you are starting out, a small selection is enough to try these combinations: one record with a groove you like, another that provides more contrast, then one that still intrigues you. Take time to get to know them before filling the next crate.

05

The exact reference, before the basket

Note the label and catalogue number. Then check the tracks, format and edition: reissue, test pressing, a particular colour or a used copy. Similar sleeves can accompany different versions. The product page should match the record you have found.

For used records, the condition of the vinyl and sleeve are assessed separately. For price and availability, return to the product page when ordering. The Hardtek, Tribe and Freetekno section lets you continue searching with those references in hand.
