The collectives behind the records

On its official website, SP23 tells the story of Spiral Tribe’s early London parties, journeys through Europe and mobile studio. The music appears alongside the means of making it and the parties where it circulates. The account gives context to names encountered on records.

A label, studio or shared project can lead to several musicians. Following those names reveals a collective’s connections without assuming all its records sound alike. A scene comprises different paths, sometimes brought together on the same centre label.

02

Does that passage come from a record or a live performance?

A mix combines records or other tracks. A live set is a performance whose form depends on the musician and their tools. SP23 describes, among other things, the role of improvisation in the work of 69DB and Crystal Distortion. That difference matters when trying to find a passage you heard.

First check how the recording is presented: DJ set, live performance or record demonstration. Read the description and look for a tracklist. A moment from a live performance may not have been released on vinyl in the exact form you just heard.

03

Keeping references you can find again

For each discovery, three details already help you move forward: the artist, label and catalogue number, when given. Add the official link and a few words about the passage you liked. You can resume the search without listening to an entire video again.

Then try another release on the label and another project by the musician. Compare them with your starting record. A neighbouring number in a series deserves a listen, but it may offer something different: the reference helps you search; it does not replace previews.

04

A small selection to get to know properly

Start with one record for its movement, another for a different atmosphere, then a release that still leaves you with questions. Change their listening order. Differences between tracks sometimes become clearer when you put them together.

If you mix, note passages where a transition seems possible: clear percussion, a new phrase, a change of texture. At home, the question can be simpler: which record do you want to play again? Returning to the same sides also helps refine a selection.

From the reference to the right copy

On the product page, compare title, artist, label and tracklist. Check the format, edition and stated features: reissue, test pressing or used copy. A familiar image is not always enough to identify the version on offer.

The Hardtek, Tribe and Freetekno section lets you continue from those references. Previews tell you about the music; the product page specifies the copy, its price and availability. If you still have doubts about the edition, ask the record shop before ordering.
